Heart Water, APWT2024 Chiang Mai

Sounds from the Ping River to the Streets of the Old Town…

I finally received these wonderful images from my recent collaborative performance in Chiang Mai for APWT2024 (Asia Pacific Writers Translators).

Thanks Indyana Horobin (@erik_the_deer) for capturing such great moments from the night. You were so busy the whole event, I only really got to meet you as we waited for our connecting flights home.

And thanks again Eri for weaving the sounds of the Ping River and the streets of the Old Town on your decks whilst I played guitar, flute and sung. It was lovely to connect and collaborate so quickly on something so beautiful.

Eri’s bio

We started with the submerged sounds of the Ping River, from the turbulent running middle to the noisy creatures of the gentle banks. Then we moved into the daytime streets of Chiang Mai and into the markets and busy temple sidewalks. The Old City was a pleasure to explore and record.

And the venue for the performance was the stunning Kalm Village, a cultural centre with so many beautiful spaces that played host to this opening dinner, many poetry readings and morning coffee contemplations.

I also love that there are no recordings of this…the performance exists in its moment and has drifted off just like the everyday city sounds we were toying with.

I also wrote a little Substack while I was waiting for my connecting flight home in Hong Kong. https://substack.com/home/post/p-152136370 I tried to write something creative…. you could say I was inspired.

Many thanks to Sally Breen and the team at APWT (@apwriters) for having me along and also the City of Gold Coast for their support through their professional development funding.

I can’t wait for the next APWT event….
