The Sounds of the River

2023 has been a wonderful year of sonic explorations as I have immersed myself in various environments around the Nerang River (Ngarang-wal) and the Gold Coast, recording sounds and soundscapes. Some of these recordings have found their way into a new body of work that will be released as an album in 2024 called ‘Red Gold’.

On this adventure my Brother-in-Law Ben and I took a boat out on the Nerang to get a feel of the tides, take video footage and record sounds. We cut the engine just off Girung Island near Isle of Capri to drop down the hydrophone and listen to the underwater environment.

This video was created with the support of HOTA, Home of the Arts through their ArtKeeper program. https://hota.com.au/

The song featured is a new track called ‘Playful Creatures in the Shallows of the Sand’. Jonquil Babb co/wrote and sang along with me.

I respectfully acknowledge the people of the Yugambeh language region and in particular the Kombumerri people who lived off the land and the water around Ngarang-wal and the Gold Coast and continue to share these connections to this day.
